The landscape region is formed of Hiiuma and Vormsi islands and 20 islets near the coast
Formed by step-by-step land uplift
The oldest part - Kõpu Height which has been an island for more than 7000yrs
The youngest - south-western part with a number of capes and bays
Coastal terraces, beach ridges (dunes) - especially on Kõpu and Tahkuna peninsulas
In the central part - largest wetlands, paludified and paludifying plains and forests
Extensive forest areas: 71% of the territory of the region (broad leaf mixed forests, pine forests, heath forests, etc)
The limestone bedrock with a thick Quaternary cover
Kärdla-Paluküla round limestone walls of the ancient buried meteorite crater
Sparse stream network; the unique Vanajõgi (Old river) meandering through the dunes in its old bed, in the deep valley
Tihu lake area - paludifying/terrestrializing lakes in the central part
